Resting Subtropical Grasslands from Grazing in the Wet Season Boosts Biocrust Hotspots to Improve Soil Health

چکیده

Effective grazing management in Australia’s semi-arid rangelands requires monitoring landscape conditions and identifying sustainable productive practice through understanding the interactions of environmental factors soil health. Challenges include extreme rainfall variability, intensifying drought, inherently nutrient-poor soils. We investigated impacts strategies on function—specifically health—as foundation for pastures, integrating heterogenous nature grass tussocks interspaces that naturally exist between them. At Wambiana—a long-term research site north-eastern Australia—we studied two types, stocking rates (high, moderate), resting land from during wet seasons (rotational spelling). Rotational spelling had highest biocrust (living cover), under tussocks. Biocrusts were dominated by cyanobacteria binds particles, reduces erosion, sequesters carbon, fixes nitrogen, improves fertility. with a moderate rate emerged as best at these sites, adjustment line type recommended. In drought-prone environments, presence integrity biocrusts connects function protect enrich will support ecosystem economic profitability cattle production rangelands.

Soil Organic Carbon Content and Stocks in Relation to Grazing Management in Semi-Arid Grasslands of Kenya

Rangelands cover approximately 85% of Kenya’s land mass and is a major resource for livestock farming with a considerable potential to mitigate climate change, yet these lands are stressed differently by various management. Our study aimed at determining the influence of grazing management systems (rotational, continuous and ungrazed) on soil organic carbon stocks in Yoani ranch located in the ...

Wet-season spatial variability in N2O emissions from a tea field in subtropical central China

Tea fields emit large amounts of nitrous oxide (N2O) to the atmosphere. Obtaining accurate estimations of N2O emissions from tea-planted soils is challenging due to strong spatial variability. We examined the spatial variability in N2O emissions from a red-soil tea field in Hunan Province, China, on 22 April 2012 (in a wet season) using 147 static mini chambers approximately regular gridded in ...

FORAGES AND PASTURES SYMPOSIUM: Improving soil health and productivity on grasslands using managed grazing of livestock.

Beyond grazing, managed grasslands provide ecological services that may offer economic incentives for multifunctional use. Increasing biodiversity of plant communities may maximize net primary production by optimizing utilization of available light, water, and nutrient resources; enhance production stability in response to climatic stress; reduce invasion of exotic species; increase soil OM; re...
